American-born French performer Josephine Baker (3 June 1906 – 12 April 1975) was a dancer, singer of jazz and pop music, and actress, recognized in various contexts as the "Black Pearl," "Bronze Venus," "Jazz Cleopatra," and the "Creole Goddess." Originally named Freda Josephine McDonald in St. Louis, Missouri, she became a French citizen in 1937. Baker was proficient in both English and French.

Baker made history as the first African American woman to lead a significant film production with Zouzou (1934), achieving international fame as an entertainer. She declined to perform for segregated audiences within the United States and is acknowledged for her involvement in the Civil Rights Movement. In 1968, Coretta Scott King approached her with an informal leadership role within the movement following Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination; however, Baker declined this position. Additionally, she contributed to the French Resistance during World War II and was awarded military honors including the Croix de guerre and received recognition as a Chevalier of the Légion d'honneur from General Charles de Gaulle.
