Australian swimmer Karen Anne Phillips, also known as Karen Anne Higgison after her marriage, was active in the butterfly and individual medley events during the 1980s. She earned a silver medal in the 200-meter butterfly at the Los Angeles Summer Olympics held in 1984.

Phillips grew up in Nowra, New South Wales, and was chosen to compete for Australia in both the 200-meter butterfly and 400-meter individual medley. Her entry into these finals was unexpected; she just managed to qualify for the final of the 200-meter butterfly while narrowly missing out on reaching the final for the 400-meter individual medley. Despite being significantly behind Mary T. Meagher from the United States, Phillips achieved a personal best time of 2 minutes and 10.56 seconds to secure second place, with Meagher finishing approximately seven meters ahead.

At the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, Scotland, two years later in 1986, Phillips found further success by winning another silver medal in her specialty event of the 200-meter butterfly.

In recognition of her achievements, she became the first recipient of Athlete of the Year honors from the Australian Institute of Sport for their inaugural award cycle spanning 1983–84.
