Croatian politician and diplomat Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović (pronounced [ЙЎrЗЋbar kitЗЋЛђroК‹itЙ•]; born 29 April 1968) has been serving as the 4th President of Croatia since her election in 2015. She is recognized as the first female to hold this position following Croatia's initial multi-party elections in 1990. At the age of 46, she also became the youngest individual to take on the presidency. Prior to her presidential role, Grabar-Kitarović occupied various governmental and diplomatic roles, including Minister of European Affairs from 2003 to 2005, making history as the first female Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration between 2005 and 2008 during both Ivo Sanader's administrations. Additionally, she served as Croatian Ambassador to the United States from 2008 until 2011 and worked at NATO as Assistant Secretary General for Public Diplomacy under Secretaries General Anders Fogh Rasmussen and Jens Stoltenberg from 2011 through 2014. Grabar-Kitarović participated in the presidential election held in December 2014 and January 2015 as one of four candidates, being the only woman among them; she placed second in the initial round before narrowly defeating incumbent President Ivo Josipović in a closely contested runoff. Her strong showing in that first round was largely considered surprising given that most polls had indicated a significant lead for Josipović, with some suggesting he might secure over half of all votes outright. In that second round, Grabar-Kitarović won against Josipović by a narrow margin (1.48%), receiving fewer total votes than any other elected president in Croatia’s history (1.114 million). Furthermore, having previously had Jadranka Kosor serve as Prime Minister from 2009 to 2011, her presidency added Croatia to a select group of parliamentary republics featuring both a female head of state and head of government.

Grabar-Kitarović was affiliated with the conservative Croatian Democratic Union party from its inception in 1993 until her departure in early office after becoming president in May 2015; she also held membership within the Trilateral Commission but stepped down from both affiliations upon assuming her presidential duties due to regulations prohibiting dual political engagements while serving as president. In recognition of her influence, Forbes magazine ranked Grabar-Kitarović as the world's number thirty-nine most powerful woman in their list published in 2017.
