Mylène Farmer, born Mylène Jeanne Gautier on September 12, 1961, in Pierrefonds, Montréal, is a French pop singer born in Canada. Her stage name is a tribute to Frances Farmer. She is successful in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, French-speaking Switzerland, Russia, and Eastern European countries. In German-speaking regions, cover versions of her songs "Libertine" and "Désenchantée" by Kate Ryan, as well as singer Alizée, for whom she wrote lyrics, are better known than Farmer's originals.
Unusually for the music industry, Farmer rarely appears in the media or at public events, and she has no official or permanent internet presence. Temporary websites are created by production and record companies for marketing and promotion. Her literary song lyrics and cinematic music videos have contributed to her popularity, along with her elaborately produced concerts. For example, the stage setup for her "Avant Que L'Ombre" tour in January 2006 (13 performances) could only be installed in Paris at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy due to its complexity. The show included a water curtain effect, an additional central stage, a lifting bridge, and a crane mechanism that lowered Farmer in a glass coffin from the ceiling and later pulled her over the audience in an oversized candelabrum. Transporting and reinstalling the stage elsewhere was practically impossible due to its size and complexity. Farmer has sold around 25 million records, making her one of the most successful French music artists worldwide.
