Dragun spent her formative years in Virginia, where she attended high school. Reports indicate that she began wearing dresses early on but only embraced her transgender identity during her college years. In various YouTube videos, Dragun has candidly shared details about her transition from male to female. In an article by Forbes, Nikita mentioned, “I never wanted to nap. I was always mature for my age. I wanted to put on a dress and look cute. Everyone else can nap, but I’m going to be a princess over here! But one day a teacher came over and asked why I was dressing up like this and then she called my parents.” The same article highlights her awareness of being different yet feeling unable to express herself due to fears of bullying or mockery. Dragun gained admission into New York University with a full scholarship but opted instead for community college. In 2015 while living in Los Angeles, Dragun publicly identified as transgender through content shared online including a video criticizing Victoria's Secret for not including transgender models in their shows; this video garnered over 10 million views on Twitter after expressing disappointment at remarks made by the brand's chief marketing director regarding fantasy roles within modeling. In 2018, she earned her bachelor's degree in beauty business and marketing from the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising.

In March 2019, Dragun announced the launch of her cosmetic line named Dragun Beauty aimed not only at mainstream consumers but also specifically catering to the transgender community.Dragun has faced several controversies during her career involving accusations related to racism and blackface along with disputes with fellow YouTubers such as Jeffree Star and James Charles.
