American industrial pop artist Alaina Marie Beaton, widely recognized by her stage name Porcelain Black, was born on October 1, 1985. She began her musical journey at the age of eighteen as a solo performer under the moniker Porcelain and the Tramps with Virgin Records. However, disagreements arose between Black and Virgin regarding her musical direction. The tracks she created were uploaded to her Myspace account "rockcitynosebleed," where they garnered millions of views. After three years of seeking an exit from her contract, she joined RedOne's Universal Republic label, 2101 Records, in late 2009 and commenced work on her debut album. Following various internal conflicts with producer RedOne, Porcelain Black revealed that their collaboration had concluded while announcing plans to release an album similar to her previous project in 2015.

She has been featured in several music videos such as Jack White's "Freedom at 21" and Travie McCoy's "We'll Be Alright". In addition to performing, she is credited as a songwriter for tracks by One Direction, Orianthi, The Used, and Mexican singer Belinda among others. As a solo artist, she has put out three singles: "This Is What Rock n' Roll Looks Like", "Naughty Naughty", and "One Woman Army", with the first featuring contributions from Lil Wayne. The initial two songs charted on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs list. "One Woman Army" achieved top-forty status in France, Spain, and Wallonia; it surpassed all prior singles in sales within France and became her first number-one hit on that country's iTunes chart.

Following the launch of her debut single, Lil Wayne invited her to join him as an opening act for the latter part of his I Am Music Tour. Her television debut occurred on Late Show with David Letterman where she performed "This Is What Rock n' Roll Looks Like". Musically inclined towards blending industrial elements with pop genres incorporating electronic synthesizers alongside catchy hooks defines her style. She is distinguished for having guttural vocals paired with two-toned hair and describes her sound as a blend between Marilyn Manson’s edge and Britney Spears’ appeal. Vocally likened to Courtney Love’s style, Porcelain Black was approached for background vocals on Love's album released in 2008.
