She began her professional work in the German Heimatfilm genre during the early 1950s at the age of 15. Between 1955 and 1957, she portrayed Empress Elisabeth of Austria in the Austrian Sissi trilogy. Schneider later relocated to France, where she starred in successful films that received critical acclaim from prominent directors of that time.
