American actress Candice Bergen (born May 9, 1946) is also recognized as a former fashion model. She received five Emmy Awards and two Golden Globe Awards for her performance in the lead role on the CBS sitcom Murphy Brown (1988–98). Additionally, she is known for portraying Shirley Schmidt on the ABC drama Boston Legal (2005–08). Bergen was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her work in Starting Over (1979), and she also received a BAFTA Award nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Gandhi (1982).

Bergen initiated her professional journey as a fashion model and graced the cover of Vogue magazine prior to making her film debut in The Group (1966). She subsequently appeared in The Sand Pebbles (1966), Soldier Blue (1970), Carnal Knowledge (1971), and The Wind and the Lion (1975). Her Broadway debut occurred with the play Hurlyburly in 1984. Between 2000 and 2002, she featured in three episodes of HBO's Sex and the City. Other notable film appearances include Miss Congeniality (2000), Sweet Home Alabama (2002), The Women (2008), and Bride Wars (2009). In the 2010s, she returned to Broadway to perform in revivals of The Best Man (2012) and Love Letters (2014).
