American singer-songwriter Fiona Apple McAfee-Maggart (born September 13, 1977) is also a pianist and record producer. She received classical piano training during her childhood and began writing her own music at the age of eight. Apple's first album, Tidal, created when she was seventeen years old, debuted in 1996 and won a Grammy for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance for the track "Criminal". She continued with When the Pawn... (1999), produced by Jon Brion, which achieved both critical acclaim and commercial success, eventually reaching platinum status.

For her third studio project, Extraordinary Machine (2005), Apple once again worked with Brion and started recording the album in 2002. However, due to dissatisfaction with its production quality, she chose not to release it initially; this led to fans mistakenly protesting against Epic Records under the impression that they were blocking its launch. The album was later re-produced without Brion's involvement and became available in October 2005 to positive reviews from critics. In 2012, she launched her fourth studio work, The Idler Wheel..., which garnered widespread critical appreciation along with an extensive tour across the USA.
