English actress Jenny Runacre (born 18 August 1946) has South African roots.
Born in Cape Town, South Africa, Runacre relocated to London during her childhood. She participated in the Actors' Workshop and received training in the Stanislavski Method.
During her time at the Actors' Workshop, she caught the attention of Tom Busby, a fellow student who would later become her agent. At that time, Busby was working for an American film company looking for emerging English actresses to star alongside John Cassavetes in Husbands, which was set to be filmed in London the following year. After auditioning with Cassavetes, Ben Gazzara, and Peter Falk, Runacre learned six weeks later that she had been selected for the role of Mary Tynan. She accepted this opportunity, marking it as her significant entry into film.
Runacre subsequently joined the original cast of Oh! Calcutta!. After a year with that production, she featured in several films including Pier Paolo Pasolini's The Canterbury Tales, John Huston's The Mackintosh Man, Robert Fuest's The Final Programme, Michelangelo Antonioni's The Passenger, and Derek Jarman's Jubilee where she portrayed Elizabeth I and "Bod." Her career also encompassed theatre performances as well as appearances on British television; one notable role was Brenda Champion in Brideshead Revisited.
In the 1990s, Runacre shifted focus towards academic pursuits. She obtained a Master's degree in Fine Art Practice from Central Saint Martin's College of Art and Design. Currently serving as a lecturer-in-residence specializing in art education, she has engaged with installation art and experimental filmmaking.
In 2007 Ranacre directed Frozen by Gareth Parker and Andrew Swann; this production received nominations for Best Direction, Best Writing and Best Overall Production at the LOST Theatre Festival. Starring Jack Bowman (from Crossroads) and Josephine Hart , it finished second overall. Following its successful stage run, Runacre also helmed an audio adaptation of Frozen by Wireless Theatre Company featuring its original cast.
Most recently Jenny appeared in John Maybury’s film The Edge of Love released during summer 2008.
