American singer-songwriter Jhené Aiko Efuru Chilombo (born March 16, 1988) began her music journey by lending her vocals and appearing in various music videos for the R&B collective B2K. During this time, she was referred to as "cousin" of B2K member Lil' Fizz, a claim that was not accurate but served as a promotional strategy suggested by Sony and Epic Records to boost Aiko's visibility within the group and help build her personal fan base. Although Aiko planned to release her debut album titled My Name Is Jhené in 2003 under Sony, The Ultimate Group, and Epic labels, it ultimately did not materialize; she later requested to be released from the label in order to focus on her education. In March 2011, Aiko re-entered the music scene with a mixtape called Sailing Soul(s). On December 16, 2011, she secured a recording deal with American producer No I.D.'s ARTium label, which is distributed by Def Jam Recordings. In 2013, she contributed to Big Sean's track "Beware," featuring Lil Wayne; this marked her first entry into the top 40 of the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. Later that year in November, she launched her inaugural project for ARTium and Def Jam—a five-track EP named Sail Out—supported by singles such as "3:16AM", "Bed Peace", and "The Worst," with the latter achieving platinum status from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Her first major-label album Souled Out was released on September 9, 2014. Following that release came her second studio album Trip on September 22, 2017. On March 6, 2020, Aiko unveiled her third studio effort Chilombo, which resulted in three Grammy Award nominations for Aiko including Album of the Year.
