Joan Alexandra Molinsky (June 8, 1933 – September 4, 2014), widely recognized as Joan Rivers, was an American comedian, actress, author, producer, and television personality known for her provocative comedic style—alternating between self-critical humor and sharp wit directed at public figures and politicians.

Rivers gained fame in 1965 after appearing on The Tonight Show. Under the guidance of her mentor Johnny Carson, the program helped define Rivers' unique comedic approach. In 1986, with her competing show The Late Show with Joan Rivers, she became the first female host of a late-night network talk show. Later on, she hosted The Joan Rivers Show (1989–1993), where she earned a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Talk Show Host. Known for her humorous celebrity interviews on red carpets during award shows, Rivers co-hosted E!'s Fashion Police from 2010 to 2014 and starred alongside her daughter Melissa Rivers in the reality series Joan & Melissa: Joan Knows Best? (2011–2014). She was featured in the documentary titled Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work (2010).

Beyond promoting a line of jewelry and clothing through QVC, Rivers wrote twelve bestselling books and released several comedy albums. She received a Grammy Award nomination in 1984 for her album What Becomes a Semi-Legend Most?; additionally nominated for a Tony Award in 1994 for Best Actress in a Play due to her portrayal in Sally Marr...and Her Escorts. In recognition of her work posthumously in 2015, she was awarded a Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album for Diary of a Mad Diva.

In 1968, Jack Gould from The New York Times referred to Rivers as "quite possibly the most intuitively funny woman alive".
