German politician and lawyer Katarina Barley (born 19 November 1968) currently holds the position of Federal Minister of Justice and Consumer Protection in Angela Merkel's fourth cabinet. She previously occupied the role of Federal Minister for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth from 2 June 2017 until 14 March 2018, and served as acting Federal Minister of Labour and Social Affairs starting on 28 September 2017. As a member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany, she has been part of the Bundestag since 2013 and was Secretary-General from 2015 to 2017. Barley possesses law degrees from institutions in both France and Germany along with a doctorate in European law; she has experience working as a corporate lawyer at Wessing & Berenberg-Gossler in Hamburg, as well as serving as a judge and legal advisor for governmental entities. Born with British citizenship, she now holds dual citizenship in both Germany and Britain.
