American singer, songwriter, actress, and record producer Keri Lynn Hilson (born December 5, 1982) hails from Decatur, Georgia. During her formative years, she collaborated with producer Anthony Dent as a songwriter and background vocalist for various R&B and hip hop musicians. At the age of 14, Hilson obtained a recording contract with the girl group D'Signe, which later disbanded. She pursued studies at Oxford College of Emory University and Emory University in Atlanta while continuing to craft songs for artists such as Britney Spears, The Pussycat Dolls, and Mary J. Blige alongside the production team known as The Clutch. In 2006, she joined American rapper Timbaland's label Mosley Music. Her rise to prominence occurred in 2007 when she featured on Timbaland's track "The Way I Are," which achieved worldwide chart success.
