American actress and television director Melissa Ellen Gilbert (born May 8, 1964) started her professional work as a child performer in the late 1960s, featuring in various commercials and guest roles on TV shows. From 1974 to 1984, she played Laura Ingalls Wilder on NBC's Little House on the Prairie. Throughout her time on Little House, Gilbert took part in several well-known television movies such as The Diary of Anne Frank and The Miracle Worker.

In adulthood, she focused primarily on television films while also accepting guest appearances and engaging in voice acting for animated series like Batman: The Animated Series. Between 2009 and 2010, Gilbert portrayed Caroline "Ma" Ingalls in the touring version of Little House on the Prairie, the Musical. In 2012, she participated as a contestant in season fourteen of ABC's reality dance competition Dancing with the Stars.

Gilbert held the position of President of the Screen Actors Guild from 2001 until 2005. Her autobiography titled Prairie Tale: A Memoir was published in 2009. In addition to this work, she authored a children's short story called Daisy and Josephine and My Prairie Cookbook: Memories and Frontier Food from My Little House to Yours in 2014.

In 2016, Gilbert sought election to U.S. Congress representing Michigan's 8th congressional district as a Democrat but withdrew due to health concerns.
