American actress and director Sally Margaret Field (born November 6, 1946) initiated her professional work in television with roles in the sitcoms Gidget (1965–66) and The Flying Nun (1967–70). She transitioned to film, debuting with Smokey and the Bandit (1977), followed by Norma Rae (1979), which earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress. Her subsequent performances in Absence of Malice (1981) and Kiss Me Goodbye (1982) led to Golden Globe Award nominations. Field received a second Oscar for Best Actress for her role in Places in the Heart (1984). Additional Golden Globe nominations came from her work in Murphy's Romance (1985) and Steel Magnolias (1989).

Throughout the 1990s, Field featured in various films such as Not Without My Daughter (1991) and Mrs. Doubtfire (1993), later being nominated for a BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role due to her performance in Forrest Gump (1994). In the following decade, she made a comeback to television with a recurring part on NBC's medical drama ER, earning the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series in 2001. From 2006 until 2011, she played Nora Walker on ABC's Brothers & Sisters, winning the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 2007. Field portrayed Mary Todd Lincoln in Lincoln (2012), receiving nominations for both an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress among other honors. She also took on the role of Aunt May in The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and returned to this character for its sequel released in 2014.

Field directed The Christmas Tree, a TV film released in 1996, contributed to an episode of HBO’s miniseries From the Earth to the Moon aired in 1998, as well as helming Beautiful (2000). In recognition of her contributions to entertainment, she was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame during 2014.
