American swimmer Simone Ashley Manuel (born August 2, 1996) specializes in sprint freestyle events. During the 2016 Rio Olympics, she achieved success with two gold and two silver medals: securing gold in the 100-meter freestyle and the 4x100-meter medley while earning silver in both the 50-meter freestyle and the 4×100-meter freestyle relay. In her victory for the 100-meter freestyle, which resulted in a tie with Canada’s Penny Oleksiak, Manuel became the first African American woman to claim an individual Olympic gold medal in swimming, establishing both an Olympic record and an American record. At the subsequent Tokyo Olympics in 2020, she contributed to winning a bronze medal as part of the U.S. team for the 4×100-meter freestyle relay.

Manuel is also a holder of three world records as part of various relay teams and has won six titles at the NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships. She is recognized as one of only three African American women to finish within the top three positions for the 100-yard freestyle event at any Division I NCAA Swimming Championship. From 2014 through 2018, she was enrolled at Stanford University, representing their swimming program known as Stanford Cardinal and playing a vital role in securing NCAA team championships for women's swimming and diving during both years of competition from 2017 to 2018. She turned professional in July of 2018.
