Vanessa Lynn Williams (born March 18, 1963) is an American singer, actress, and designer. She first became known as the inaugural African-American titleholder of Miss America when she was crowned Miss America 1984 in September 1983. However, shortly before her reign concluded, she discovered that Penthouse magazine planned to publish unauthorized nude images of her in an upcoming edition. As a result, Williams resigned from her position on July 22, 1984 (following pressure from the Miss America Organization), and was succeeded by first runner-up Suzette Charles from New Jersey. Subsequently, she made a successful return to entertainment with the hit song "The Right Stuff." Following this comeback, she released several popular albums and singles while also achieving success in acting (notably portraying Teri Joseph in the film Soul Food from 1997, Wilhelmina Slater in Ugly Betty, and Renee Perry in Desperate Housewives).

Thirty-two years after her resignation as Miss America, Sam Haskell, the current CEO of the Miss America Organization, publicly apologized to Williams during the opening of the Miss America 2016 pageant where she served as head judge. He stated: "I have been a close friend of this beautiful and talented lady for 32 years. You have lived your life in grace and dignity; never was it more evident than during the events of 1984 when you resigned. Though none of us currently involved were present at that time, on behalf of today’s organization I want to express my apologies to you and your mother, Miss Helen Williams. I apologize for anything said or done that may have made you feel any less than the Miss America you are now and will always be."
