American actress, director, and producer Vera Ann Farmiga (born August 6, 1973) began her professional journey in theater with the production Taking Sides in 1996. She made her initial appearance on television with the Fox fantasy show Roar in 1997 and entered the film industry through the drama-thriller Return to Paradise released in 1998.

Farmiga gained significant attention in 2004 for her role as a mother concealing a drug addiction in the drama Down to the Bone. Following this, she appeared alongside other actors in The Manchurian Candidate (2004), The Departed (2006), The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas (2008), and Nothing But the Truth (2008). Her performance as Alex Goran in Up in the Air (2009) earned her various nominations including for an Academy Award, BAFTA Award, Golden Globe Award, and Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Supporting Actress.

She subsequently took leading roles in films such as Orphan (2009), Source Code (2011), and Safe House (2012). Farmiga marked her debut as a director with Higher Ground (2011), where she also played the main character. In 2013, she took on the role of paranormal investigator Lorraine Warren within The Conjuring horror franchise and reprised this character for its sequel released in 2016.

From 2013 onward, Farmiga has portrayed Norma Louise Bates on A&E’s thriller series Bates Motel, receiving a nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award for this part. This character along with her performances in Joshua, Orphan, and both Conjuring films have led to her being recognized as a modern scream queen.
