Japanese multimedia artist Yoko Ono (小野 洋子, Ono Yōko, born February 18, 1933) is recognized for her contributions as a singer, songwriter, and peace advocate. She is also noted for her involvement in performance art, music composition, and film production. Ono was married to singer-songwriter John Lennon as his second spouse.

Ono's early years were spent in Tokyo where she attended Gakushuin. After two years of study, she left the institution and reunited with her family in New York in 1953. She briefly attended Sarah Lawrence College before immersing herself in the downtown New York City art scene that included engagement with the Fluxus movement. Her first encounter with Lennon occurred in 1966 during one of her art shows in London; they became romantically involved by 1968. The couple famously transformed their honeymoon at the Hilton Amsterdam into a platform for public demonstrations against the Vietnam War through their Bed-Ins for Peace performances held in Amsterdam and Montreal during 1969. Through her music, Ono brought feminist themes to light and inspired various artists including B-52s and Meredith Monk. In 1980, she received both commercial success and critical recognition with the album Double Fantasy—a collaboration with Lennon released shortly before his passing.

The public perception of Ono’s artistic endeavors has evolved over time, aided by a retrospective exhibition at a Whitney Museum branch in 1989 along with the release of Onobox—a six-disc collection—in 1992. Additional retrospectives showcasing her work took place at Japan Society in New York City (2001), Bielefeld (Germany), UK (2008), Frankfurt, and Bilbao (Spain) during 2013. In acknowledgment of her lifetime achievements, she was awarded the Golden Lion Award from Venice Biennale in 2009 as well as Austria's Oskar Kokoschka Prize—its highest honor for contemporary applied arts—in 2012.

As John Lennon's widow, Ono actively maintains his legacy through various initiatives such as funding Strawberry Fields located in New York City and establishing the Imagine Peace Tower situated in Iceland alongside managing the John Lennon Museum previously located in Saitama, Japan (which closed its doors in 2010). Her philanthropic efforts extend to supporting arts programs alongside relief efforts for disasters affecting Japan and the Philippines among other causes. Continuing her activism work since launching a biennial $50,000 LennonOno Grant for Peace back in 2002 while co-founding Artists Against Fracking group during 2012 highlights ongoing commitment to social issues. She has one daughter named Kyoko Chan Cox from her marriage to Anthony Cox along with son Sean Taro Ono Lennon from her union with John Lennon who collaborates musically with her.
