Luso-Brazilian samba vocalist Carmen Miranda, GCIH • OMC (Portuguese pronunciation: [Л€kaЙѕmбєЅИ·Мѓ miЛ€ЙѕЙђМѓdЙђ], February 9, 1909 – August 5, 1955), was a prominent singer, dancer, Broadway performer, and film actress active from the 1930s through the 1950s.
Miranda gained fame as a radio and cinema personality in Brazil during the late 1920s. Her initial recordings quickly elevated her to national prominence. Establishing herself as a samba artist in Brazil throughout the 1920s and early 1930s, she recorded for gramophone releases, appeared frequently on Rio de Janeiro's radio stations, and featured in numerous early sound films or chanchadas produced in Brazil. By the mid-1930s, she had become the most favored female Brazilian singer. After witnessing her performance at a casino in Urca, Rio de Janeiro in 1939, Broadway entrepreneur Lee Shubert offered Miranda an eight-week engagement to perform in The Streets of Paris on Broadway.
In 1940, she debuted in Hollywood with Down Argentine Way alongside Don Ameche and Betty Grable; her distinctive attire and Latin accent became defining traits. That same year, she ranked as the third most popular figure in the United States and was invited to perform for President Franklin Roosevelt with her ensemble Bando da Lua. Known as "The Brazilian Bombshell," Carmen Miranda is recognized for her iconic fruit hat costume seen in many American films including The Gang's All Here released in 1943. By 1945, she held the title of highest-paid woman actor across America.
Between 1940 and 1953, Miranda starred in fourteen Hollywood productions. Despite being celebrated for her skills as an entertainer, her popularity began to decline towards the end of World War II. She later expressed dissatisfaction with the stereotypical "Brazilian Bombshell" persona that had been associated with her career while attempting to distance herself from it with limited success. Nevertheless, Miranda increasingly dedicated herself to nightclub performances while also becoming a regular guest on television variety shows—her acts significantly contributed to promoting Brazilian music while enhancing recognition of broader Latin culture despite ongoing stereotyping throughout her career.
Carmen Miranda became notable as the first Latin American celebrity invited to leave handprints and footprints at Grauman's Chinese Theatre courtyard back in 1941. She was also recognized as the inaugural South American honored with a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame. Considered influential within Brazil's Tropicalismo cultural movement emerging during the1960s; a museum was established posthumously honoring her legacy in Rio de Janeiro after which an acclaimed documentary titled Carmen Miranda: Bananas is My Business premiered about her life’s work in1995.
