Her campaign focused on issues like economic disparity, renewable energy initiatives, universal health care access, reforming mass incarceration practices across America, and safeguarding undocumented minors from deportation. She faced Cuomo during the Democratic primary held on September 13, 2018 but did not win; she secured approximately 34% of votes compared to his total of around 66%. Following this primary loss, Nixon was named the gubernatorial candidate by the Working Families Party; however, they later endorsed Cuomo after her defeat.

She met her spouse at a gay rights event held back in 2002 and revealed their engagement during a rally advocating marriage equality within New York state back in 2009. In recognition of her efforts towards equality advocacy work including receiving Yale University's Artist for Equality award presented to her during its ceremony held over three years ago along with being honored with Visibility Award by Human Rights Campaign organization four years later.
