American R&B artist Kimberly Michelle Pate, recognized as K. Michelle, is also a songwriter, television host, guitarist, and pianist. In 2009, she entered into a recording agreement with Jive Records and released her single "Fakin' It," featuring Missy Elliott. She followed this with three additional R&B singles that achieved chart success: "Fallin'," "I Just Can't Do This," and "How Many Times," before departing from Jive Records. In 2012, K. Michelle gained more visibility by participating in VH1's reality series Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta.

Her participation on the show led to a contract with Atlantic Records, culminating in the release of her long-awaited debut studio album Rebellious Soul on August 13, 2013. Michelle's The Rebellious Soul Musical, directed by Golden Globe winner Idris Elba, premiered on VH1 on August 19, 2014. In that same year, she launched her own reality program titled K. Michelle: My Life. She then released her second studio album Anybody Wanna Buy a Heart?, which debuted at number six on the US Billboard 200 and reached number one on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Additionally, she became the first African American female to secure an endorsement deal with Jack Daniels while working on developing her own beverage line. Her third studio album More Issues Than Vogue was made available on March 25, 2016 and debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 as well as reaching number one on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
