Estonian singer and songwriter Kerli Kõiv, born on February 7, 1987, is commonly known as Kerli. Hailing from Elva, Estonia, she participated in various singing contests before being signed by LA Reid to Island Records in 2006. Her first extended play was released in 2007 under her name, followed by her debut studio album titled Love Is Dead in 2008, which achieved a position on the Billboard 200 chart. The album's lead single "Walking on Air" attained chart success internationally and was selected as the iTunes Store's Single of the Week with over 500,000 downloads at that time. In subsequent years, Kerli contributed to Almost Alice with her track "Tea Party" and shifted from an alternative rock style towards a sound influenced more by electronic and dance music, evident in her single "Army of Love," released in 2010.

After the launch of Love Is Dead, Kerli began working on a follow-up studio album that evolved into her second extended play Utopia, released in early 2013 and also charting on the Billboard 200. Prior to unveiling the EP's official first single "The Lucky Ones," she released two promotional tracks: "Army of Love" and "Zero Gravity." All three songs made it into the top ten of Billboard's Hot Dance Club Songs chart; two reached number one. Additionally, Kerli co-wrote songs for Utopia—namely "Skyscraper" and "I Feel Immortal"—which were later performed by artists Demi Lovato and Tarja Turunen respectively; Kerli’s rendition of “I Feel Immortal” appeared on Frankenweenie Unleashed!

In 2013, she made two appearances on Dancing with the Stars; Vibe described these performances as significant moments within the EDM scene.

Later that year in November, Kerli departed from Island Records to sign with Ultra Music.
