Brazilian big wave surfer Maya Reis Gabeira (born April 10, 1987) is recognized for riding a massive wave measuring 73.5 ft/22.4 m in Nazaré, Portugal in February 2020, which was documented by Guinness World Records as the largest wave ever surfed by a woman. This achievement also marked the highest wave surfed by any athlete that year. Prior to this record, she held the title for the biggest wave surfed by a female at 68 ft/20.8 m set in January 2018. Gabeira has been honored with various awards including an ESPY for Best Female Action Sports Athlete and is regarded among the leading female surfers globally as well as one of the most impactful female figures in surfing history.
