American rapper Melissa Arnette Elliott, born on July 1, 1971, is widely known as Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott. She initiated her musical journey in the early to mid-1990s as part of the R&B girl group Sista and subsequently joined the Swing Mob collective with her childhood friend and frequent collaborator Timbaland. Together, they produced work for various American R&B artists such as Aaliyah, 702, Total, and SWV. After numerous collaborations and guest roles, she began her solo career on July 15, 1997, releasing her debut album Supa Dupa Fly which featured the top 20 single "Sock It 2 Me." The album entered the Billboard 200 at number three, marking a record for female rappers at that time. Her follow-up album Da Real World came out on June 22, 1999; it included singles like "She's a Bitch," "All n My Grill," and the top five hit "Hot Boyz." With subsequent releases including Miss E... So Addictive (2001), Under Construction (2002), and This Is Not a Test (2003), Elliott cultivated an international presence with hits such as "Get Ur Freak On," "One Minute Man," "4 My People," "Gossip Folks," and "Work It." This last track earned her a Grammy Award for Best Female Rap Solo Performance. Throughout her career, she has won four Grammy Awards and sold over thirty million records within the United States. As reported by Billboard in 2017, she holds the title of best-selling female rapper according to Nielsen Music data. In addition to these achievements in 2019 she released an extended play titled Iconology; became recognized as the first female rapper inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame; and received MTV's Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award due to her influence on music videos.
