American actress Brittany Murphy-Monjack (originally Brittany Anne Bertolotti; November 10, 1977 – December 20, 2009) was also a singer and voice performer. Hailing from Atlanta, she relocated to Los Angeles during her teenage years to follow an acting career. Her first major role came as Tai Frasier in the film Clueless (1995), after which she took on supporting parts in indie movies including Freeway (1996) and Bongwater (1998). In 1997, she made her theatrical debut in a Broadway rendition of Arthur Miller's A View from the Bridge before taking on roles such as Daisy Randone in Girl, Interrupted (1999) and Lisa Swenson in Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999).

Throughout the early 2000s, Murphy appeared in Don't Say a Word (2001) with Michael Douglas and shared the screen with Eminem in 8 Mile (2002), where she received critical acclaim. Additional performances included Riding in Cars with Boys (2001), Spun (2002), Uptown Girls (2003), Sin City (2005), and Happy Feet (2006). She was also known for voicing Luanne Platter on the animated series King of the Hill. Her last feature film, Something Wicked, premiered in April 2014.

Murphy passed away at age 32 due to pneumonia and anemia in December 2009. The Los Angeles County Coroner's Office initially classified her death as an accidental drug overdose. However, following the similar demise of her husband Simon Monjack six months later due to identical health issues, authorities considered toxic mold exposure as a potential factor but this theory was rejected by the Coroner's Office. In 2011, Murphy’s mother Sharon initiated legal action against attorneys who had represented her previously concerning builders linked to their residence where both died.
