Canadian freestyle skier Sarah Jean Burke (September 3, 1982 – January 19, 2012) was a trailblazer in the superpipe discipline. She secured four gold medals at the Winter X Games and claimed the halfpipe world championship title in 2005. Burke played a key role in advocating for the inclusion of this event in the Olympic program for the 2014 Winter Olympics, where she was anticipated to be a strong contender for a medal.
