Romanian professional tennis player Simona Halep (pronounced [siЛ€mona haЛ€lep]; born 27 September 1991) holds the title of world No. 1 on the WTA Tour, a position she first reached in October 2017. Halep entered the global top 50 rankings by the end of 2012, advanced to the top 20 in August 2013, and achieved a spot in the top 10 by January 2014. In her impressive performance during the calendar year of 2013, she claimed six WTA titles—a milestone previously accomplished by Steffi Graf in 1986 when she secured seven titles—and was honored as the WTA's Most Improved Player for that year along with being recognized as ESPN Center Court's Most Improved Player.
