American politician Tulsi Gabbard (born April 12, 1981) is a major in the Hawaii Army National Guard and serves as the U.S. Representative for Hawaii's 2nd congressional district. Elected in 2012, she became the first member of Congress to identify as a practicing Hindu and the first Samoan-American elected to this position. Gabbard's declaration to pursue the Democratic nomination for the 2020 presidential election marked her as the inaugural female combat veteran to enter a presidential race. In 2002, she won a seat in the Hawaii House of Representatives. By 2004, she was recognized as the first state lawmaker to voluntarily resign from office for military service during wartime. Initially opposing LGBT rights during her early political career prior to her first deployment, Gabbard has since expressed remorse regarding those views and now champions LGBT rights. While opposing military interventionism generally, she identifies herself as having hawkish tendencies regarding terrorism issues. Her choice to engage with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and her skepticism concerning allegations of chemical weapon use amid Syria’s civil conflict drew significant criticism. On October 25, 2019, Gabbard revealed that she would not pursue re-election for another term in Congress.
