American girl group Danity Kane included members Aubrey O'Day, Wanita "D. Woods" Woodgett, Shannon Bex, Dawn Richard, and Aundrea Fimbres. Established during the third season of MTV's Making the Band reality show in 2005, they quickly signed with Bad Boy Records under Sean "Diddy" Combs.

Danity Kane released their debut self-titled studio album in 2006, which performed well in the U.S., selling one million copies domestically and producing two singles including the top 10 hit "Show Stopper" and the ballad "Ride for You." Their sophomore album, Welcome to the Dollhouse, came out in 2008 alongside their second top 10 single "Damaged." The group made history as the first female ensemble to have both of their initial albums debut at number one on Billboard charts.

Although they experienced early achievements, internal conflicts led to a pivotal meeting with Diddy where he removed O'Day and Woodgett from Danity Kane during the October 2008 finale of Making the Band 4. The remaining trio continued with pre-arranged promotional activities before officially disbanding in early 2009. By late that year, all members had been released from their contracts with Bad Boy Records. In 2013, four former members (O'Day, Bex, Richard, and Fimbres) announced plans for a reunion at the MTV Video Music Awards; however, on May 16, 2014—during their reunion tour kickoff in San Francisco—Fimbres declared her exit from the group to focus on starting a family while leaving O'Day, Bex, and Richard as a trio.

On August 8, 2014—a day following an altercation between O'Day and Richard at a recording session—O'Day along with Bex publicly stated that Danity Kane had once again disbanded. Nevertheless, their third studio project DK3 was launched later that October.
